This month, try this idea as a starter with your classes.
Give each pupil a piece of paper and tell them to divide it into 8 strips (folding it 3 times works best). They then write a word or phrase into each section (target language or English) from the last topic. The idea is that you say the phrases in the opposite language. If they have that phrase at either the top or the bottom of their piece of paper, they may tear it off. They obviously may not tear off the strip if it's in the middle of the piece of paper.
The winner is the person who is able to tear the last piece in half.
We currently have a large number of foreign nationals teaching in our schools, helping the UK in trying to solve the language teaching crisis, but will the shortage become more acute after the UK leaves the EU?
As language teachers, we are all too aware of the potential knock-on effect of a lack of language learners just a few years down the line; and not just in our own profession.
We are, of course, delighted to hear from the DfE that there has been a slight increase this year in the number of students taking a GCSE in a foreign language. We just hope the result of our hard work doesn’t now slowly unravel, following the UK’s exit from the EU.
We are all very aware of the upcoming results days!
The media often forget the teachers and staff in the schools, colleges and academies who have helped those students get their grades.
Speaking to other teaching professionals over the past few years, some have found the accuracy of their predictions to be 'up and down' (despite guidance from the different exam boards).
So how are you feeling about what could arguably be our most stressful days of the year? Do you feel confident about your predictions? Have your results been consistently in line with your predictions?
Good luck to you all (and your students, of course) over the next couple of weeks!
I'm not into the psychology of it all, but I certainly agree with the idea of setting yourself achievable and, most importantly, enjoyable goals and challenges to help you relax and switch off over the summer.
